چکیده

Introduction Hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD) is currently undergoing risk assessment in the EU (Existing Substances Regulations 793/93/EEC). During the risk assessment process, the environmental persistence of HBCD was investigated. In previous studies (Davis et al 2005, 2006a), the biodegradation of HBCD was reported to occur in freshwater aquatic sediments and digester sludge. Using C-labelled HBCD, it was demonstrated that HBCD was sequentially debrominated to t,t,t cyclododecatriene (t,t,t CDT). Moreover, the degradation rates of the three major diastereomers of HBCD (α, β, γ) were similar. The next step in elucidating the biodegradation pathway of HBCD was to investigate the fate of t,t,t CDT. Results from an initial experiment, based on a ready biodegradation test and conducted with t,t,t CDT, showed primary degradation of t,t,t CDT (Davis et al 2006b). However, due to the high background respiration (in relation to the low CDT concentrations of 1 mg to 10 mg/L), mineralization could not be verified. In the present study, the use of C radiolabeled t,t,t CDT enabled to determine both the extent of mineralization of t,t,t CDT and the metabolites formed during the degradation.

Enantioselective biotransformation of hexabromocyclododecane by in vitro rat and trout hepatic sub-cellular fractions.

α-, β-, and γ-Hexabromocyclododecanes (HBCDs) were subjected to in vitro biotransformation experiments with rat and trout liver S9 fractions for different incubation times (10, 30, and 60 min) at 2 concentration levels (1 and 10 μM). The metabolic degradation of target HBCDs followed first order kinetics. Whereas β-HBCD undergoes rapid biotransformation (t0.5 = 6.4 and 38.1 min in rat and trout...

Sources and distribution of hexabromocyclododecanes (HBCDs) in Japanese river sediment.

The distribution of hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD) in the sediment of three Japanese rivers with different characteristics (i.e., population and potential source in the catchment) was investigated and compared with the results estimated using a multimedia fate model (ChemCAN). High concentrations of HBCD in sediments in the range of 134-2060 ng g(-1) were found in a river receiving textile waste...

Levels and distribution of hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD) in environmental samples near manufacturing facilities in Laizhou Bay area, East China.

A total of 55 samples including soil, sediment, plants (cypress, reed and seepweed) and aquatic species were collected at locations around hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD) manufacturing facilities in Laizhou Bay area, East China. HBCD was determined at concentrations ranging between 0.88 and 6901 ng g(-1) dry weight (dw), 2.93-1029 ng g(-1) dw, 8.88-160241 ng g(-1) dw, and 7.09-815 ng g(-1) lipid ...

Hexabromocyclododecane in marine species from the Western Scheldt Estuary: diastereoisomer- and enantiomer-specific accumulation.

Hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD) is a widely used brominated flame retardant, which is increasingly reported in the environment. Here, we report on the diastereomeric and, for the first time, on the enantiomeric composition of HBCD in muscle and liver of several fish species caught in the Western Scheldt Estuary (The Netherlands). The total HBCD content (sum of alpha-, beta-, and gamma-diastereois...

Accumulation and phytotoxicity of technical hexabromocyclododecane in maize.

To investigate the accumulation and phytotoxicity of technical hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD) in maize, young seedlings were exposed to solutions of technical HBCD at different concentrations. The uptake kinetics showed that the HBCD concentration reached an apparent equilibrium within 96hr, and the accumulation was much higher in roots than in shoots. HBCD accumulation in maize had a positive l...
